Succession and Israeli threats
Mojtaba Khamenei β the late Ayatollah's son β has emerged as the leading candidate to become Iran's next Supreme Leader, with an announcement expected as early as Wednesday, according to the New York Times. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that any successor "will be an unequivocal target for elimination β it does not matter what his name is or where he hides."
The succession process comes as Israel struck a site linked to the Assembly of Experts in Qom, in what Israeli officials framed as an effort to disrupt the leadership selection process. The IDF also struck what it called a secret underground nuclear facility near Tehran, claiming scientists there were developing weapons components.
Kurdish front opens
The CIA is working to arm Kurdish forces to spark an uprising in Iran, according to CNN. Trump spoke with the president of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, and Kurdish opposition forces are expected to launch a ground operation in western Iran in the coming days.
