Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Now, the S&P, teetering on all time highs, just posted its worst quarter since 2022, oil was up 94% (briefly), and Moody's puts recession odds at 48.6%.

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Military

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Pentagon denies Iranian ships breached blockade: The Pentagon rejected a Lloyd's List report claiming 26 Iranian vessels evaded the U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, though the maritime intelligence firm stands by its satellite-based findings.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 US forces seize Iranian oil tanker: U.S. forces detained the Iran-linked oil tanker Tifani in the Indian Ocean, a vessel sanctioned for smuggling Iranian crude and carrying approximately 2 million barrels loaded from Iran's Kharg Island. Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the seizure and an earlier cargo ship boarding as piracy and state terrorism. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the U.S. blockade will fill Kharg Island storage within days and force Iranian oil wells to shut down.

Diplomacy

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Trump extends Iran ceasefire indefinitely: Trump announced an open-ended extension of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire at Pakistan's request, citing a fractured Iranian government and the need for Tehran to present a unified proposal, while maintaining the naval blockade of Iranian ports. The extension eliminates any timeline for resolution, giving Trump greater flexibility.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Vance peace mission to Pakistan on hold: Vice President JD Vance's planned trip to Pakistan for a second round of U.S.-Iran negotiations has been delayed after Tehran failed to respond to the latest U.S. positions, raising concerns that a diplomatic resolution is slipping further away. Iran stated it will not participate in negotiations under pressure and could only attend talks if the U.S. lifts its naval blockade and abandons its policies of threats.

🇮🇱🇱🇧 Israeli soldiers jailed for destroying Jesus statue: The Israeli military sentenced two soldiers to 30 days of detention and removed them from combat duty after one used a sledgehammer to destroy a statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon.

Oil/Economy

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Analysts warn food crisis looms from Iran war: Analysts warn the full impact of the Iran war on global food prices has yet to materialize due to the lag between rising agricultural input costs and retail prices, with severity largely dependent on how long the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted. The FAO warned that prolonged closure could trigger a global food catastrophe affecting populations in Africa and Asia most severely.
