🇺🇸🇮🇷 US launches heavy wave of strikes on Iran

US Central Command said it had completed a "heavy wave" of strikes against Iran in retaliation for Tuesday's attempted ballistic missile attacks on American forces, hitting dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets.

The operation began at 20:00 ET on Wednesday and lasted about an hour, striking military command centres, missile and drone facilities, coastal surveillance and defence sites and maritime capabilities.

Iranian state media reported that an attack on a home in the Chah Tangu neighbourhood of Qeshm island killed a father, mother and their two-year-old child, with the islands of Qeshm and Abadan both central to the oil industry.

Jordan's armed forces said air defences shot down five Iranian missiles aimed at the kingdom on Thursday, and the Egyptian government said a fire at one of its ports had been caused by a drone attack, the first time Egypt has been directly hit during the war.

Axios cited a US official saying Saudi defence minister Prince Khalid bin Salman had told President Donald Trump that Riyadh wants to de-escalate.
