🇩🇪 Germany arrests former spy chief

Germany's former foreign intelligence chief August Hanning was arrested on suspicion of treason and espionage at his home in Nordwalde near Münster.

Hanning, who led the BND from 1998 to 2005, and his legal team denied the allegations.

His former chief of staff, identified as Manfred D, was also arrested, with prosecutors alleging he supplied Hanning with about 2,000 documents, many classified, in exchange for payment.

Prosecutors believe Hanning intended to resell documents through his consultancy and drafted an analysis for a foreign intelligence officer, but said it was unclear whether that analysis reached its intended recipient.

Properties linked to both men were searched, including in Berlin, while Manfred D's representatives did not immediately respond.
