Hello,

JD Vance has postponed talks on implementing the US-Iran ceasefire deal, signed by Donald Trump and Iranian President Pezeshkian on Wednesday, citing logistical challenges.

This comes as NATO Secretary General Rutte moved to downplay Hegseth's attack on European allies in Brussels, while Ukrainian drones struck Moscow and Andy Burnham's by-election win sets up a Labour leadership challenge against Keir Starmer.

1️⃣ 🇺🇸🇪🇺 Rutte downplays Hegseth's NATO attack: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte moved to downplay Hegseth's attack on European allies in Brussels, calling the pressure productive and noting allies had contributed a record 90 billion euros in additional spending in 2025. The US separately confirmed plans to withdraw deep strike capabilities from NATO's Force Model, including long-range bombers and naval assets such as missile-launching submarines and aircraft carriers.

2️⃣ 🇬🇧 Burnham wins Makerfield seat, setting up leadership race: Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election with 55% of the vote, comfortably ahead of Reform UK candidate Robert Kenyon on 35%, in a contest widely seen as clearing the path for a Labour leadership challenge against Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Starmer confirmed he would stand in any leadership contest, while Burnham alluded to but did not explicitly declare his leadership ambitions in his victory speech.

3️⃣ 🇮🇱🇪🇺 Israel suspends contact with EU's foreign policy chief: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar cut off contact with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas after reports that she compared Israel's treatment of Palestinians to South Africa's apartheid regime during talks with Mexican officials in May. 4️⃣ 🇪🇺🇨🇳 EU leaders press for tougher trade tools against China: EU leaders at a Brussels summit called on the European Commission to assess existing trade defense instruments and develop new ones to address the competitive pressure from Chinese goods, with Germany moving toward a harder position on Beijing. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever described the issue as "urgent," citing unfair Chinese subsidies, as the Commission weighs how far member states are willing to accept potential Chinese retaliation.

5️⃣ 🇹🇼🇨🇳 Taiwan calls Chinese diplomatic pressure 'new normal': Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-Lung described China's campaign to limit the island's international access as a 'new normal,' after two Taiwanese delegates to a Kenya ocean conference had their passports and phones confiscated and were detained for over 20 hours before being expelled. Kenya defended the decision citing its 'one China' policy, while Taiwan condemned the move as unlawful and lodged a formal protest.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Vance cancels Switzerland trip as Iran talks stall

JD Vance has postponed a planned visit to Switzerland where US and Iranian officials, alongside Pakistani and Qatari mediators, had been due to meet on Friday to begin negotiating the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed by Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday.

A White House spokesperson cited logistical challenges for the delay, and Switzerland's foreign ministry confirmed the talks had been postponed while stating that preparatory work at Bürgenstock was continuing.

Under the provisional agreement, the two sides have 60 days to finalise a permanent deal, during which the US must lift its naval blockade of Iran while Tehran is required to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reaffirm it will not develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

Both parties also agreed to an "immediate" cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon. Switzerland said it remained ready to host the negotiations once rescheduled.

Its modular design allows rapid integration of sensors, weapons, and autonomy software, with variants planned for different mission types.

The escalation follows a provisional US-Iran agreement requiring both sides and their allies to immediately suspend military operations, including in Lebanon.

4️⃣ 🇺🇦🇷🇺 Ukraine strikes Moscow oil refinery in major drone attack: Ukrainian drones struck targets across the Moscow region, setting an oil refinery ablaze and forcing all four of the capital's airports to suspend flights, as Russian air defenses reported intercepting at least 180 incoming drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as justified retaliation for Russian strikes on Kyiv the previous weekend and called on Moscow to take steps toward diplomacy to end the war.
