🇨🇳 China missile test in South Pacific rattles region

China's navy test-launched a long-range ballistic missile from a nuclear-powered submarine in the South Pacific on Monday, in a rare move that drew protest from several regional governments.

The projectile, fired at 12:01pm with a dummy warhead, was described by Xinhua as routine annual training that complied with international law and targeted no country.

Australia, Japan and New Zealand criticised the launch, with New Zealand noting the missile fell within the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone established under the 1986 Treaty of Rarotonga.

The test coincided with the signing of a new Australia-Fiji defence treaty and came as Japan urged Beijing to "rethink" testing that could endanger regional security.

Beijing dismissed the criticism, with a foreign ministry spokesperson saying relevant countries should "avoid overinterpretation."
